About the Sony ES DVP-NC555ES

Sony's brushed-silver ES-series models are some of the most stylish A/V components to come along in years. If you're looking for one beautifully built source that can bring out the best in both an HDTV-ready TV and a high-performance audio system, the DVP-NC555ES is a top choice. One way it stands out from the crowd of other DVD changers is its SACD playback capability. If you're not familiar with SACD (Super Audio CD), it's a high-resolution music format co-developed by Sony (with Philips). SACD uses an ultra-high sampling rate to more faithfully reproduce the original source material. If you have a 5.1-channnel speaker system and a receiver with a 5.1 analog input, you can now enjoy high-resolution wraparound sound on multichannel SACDs. Actually, whether they're multichannel or stereo, you'll love the added realism that SACD brings to music listening — and there are already over 1,500 titles.

These days, most high-quality DVD players offer progressive-scan output, but that doesn't mean that all progressive models perform the same. Sony's advanced Precision Cinema Progressive™ design has the processing power to deliver flawless, fluid progressive-scan video on every DVD! And the DVP-NC555ES is one of the few players we've seen to use an ultra-high-speed 216MHz/12-bit video DAC.

Of course, to enjoy the benefits of progressive-scan video — more subtle detail and color gradations, and a natural filmlike smoothness — you'll need to connect the DVP-NC555ES to an HDTV-ready TV (Sony builds a variety of tube-based, flat-panel, and rear-projection models). Or, select interlaced scan for the best picture you've ever seen on your standard TV.

Since you'll probably want to use the player's 5.1-channel analog output to enjoy multichannel SACDs, you can let the player's built-in Dolby® Digital and DTS® decoders handle DVD movie soundtracks, too (or do like most folks, and make a one-cable digital connection to an A/V receiver with Dolby Digital/DTS decoding).

The convenience of a 5-disc changer really comes in handy for the growing number of multi-disc DVD titles. And it's great to be able to keep a couple of your favorite music CDs or SACDs loaded and ready to go at any time. Speaking of music, the 'NC555ES's performance on regular CDs is a big step up from ordinary CD players.
